Attack of the stats

Day 11
Tuesday, January 11, 2011
Last week I attended the “Lose to Win Challenge” orientation and today was the first weigh-in at the Patch Barracks Fitness Center. I had a feeling I wouldn't love my results but I was shocked to learn that I have 31.3% body fat. This was a wake up call, I am pretty embarrassed to admit it but I am happy to still be able to do something about it while I’m young and in "okay" health. I don’t want to spend my later years worrying about high blood pressure or diabetes so I am making it a priority to change my eating habits in hopes of adding some years to my life.

Before we moved to Germany I was in pretty good health aside from my back issues; I was working out daily and I had dropped down to a healthier weight for my size (I'm 5'2''.) I had some great muscle definition from all the kettle bell classes I had been taking and for the first time in a long time I was wearing a bikini top and shorts to the beach instead of a t-shirt. I even kept most of my good habits up while we were living here in a hotel. It wasn't until I injured my back again (in a boot camp class at the gym) and stopped working out that I quickly gained 10 pounds and haven't been able to lose it. The German beer and hearty Swabian food do not agree with my metabolism. I need to quit making excuses and start treating my body as though it were a machine, and realize that food is nothing more than fuel for my body. As my grandfather would say, "eat to live, don't live to eat."

Spend the afternoon.  You can't take it with you.  ~Annie Dillard
