Kennen Sie Deutsch?

Day 3
Monday, January 03, 2011
I've been living in Germany for four months now (thanks to my husband's awesome three year orders to Stuttgart with Marine Forces Europe!) and I thought by the time we arrived here I would be fairly fluent in German. That didn't happen so I decided to start attending German language and culture classes on Patch Barracks each Monday night from 1800-2000 hours. Hopefully before the year is over, I will be fluent enough to hold long conversations with complete strangers in German.

Me studying my German...in a bar!

The good news is, I already know quite a bit because my Mother in German and I grew up speaking it with her. I just wish we would have practiced it more because I feel so behind. After just one class with Lehrer Gudren Kaper (the language and culture instructor) I knew it was starting to come back. At least I know the important things like how to ask for the time, order food or a beer, and ask where the toilet is. The rest I will just learn as I go. Until next time, Nutze den Tag (seize the day)!

Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for wind to fly a kite. Or waiting around for Friday night or waiting perhaps for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil or a better break or a string of pearls or a pair of pants or a wig with curls or another chance. Everyone is just waiting. ~Dr. Seuss
