Real women work on cars :)

Day 8
Saturday, January 08, 2011
When we lived in North Carolina we purchased my 2006 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, and she came with free oil changes for life from National Volkswagen. When we moved to Germany, unfortunately, the free oil changes ended. Thankfully there is a self service auto hobby shop on Panzer Kaserne (military base) where we live. Military ID card holders can rent bays and borrow tools for about $8 an hour. My husband bought the oil filter from a German auto parts store and I bought the oil on base. We decided to change the oil on this beautiful, sunny, 53 degrees Fahrenheit  Saturday afternoon. And for the first time, I helped change the oil in my GLI! My husband Matt had to help me throughout the process but I turned a screwdriver, wrench, and even poured in the new oil.

My Baby, "Red Ryder"

I never knew how easy changing the oil would be; now that I've done it once with assistance, I’m confident I can do it again all by myself if I have to.

Me eating my cheese from Real

After we went home to shower and change clothes we took a drive to the Real (pronounced: Ree-Al), a huge store that reminded me of a Walmart but ten times better. The Real sells electronics, food, toys, shoes, clothes, home goods, simple car gear, and everything in between. They also have an amazing deli, butcher, bakery, and fresh fish counter. I love to buy German cheese from the deli. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday!
